Newly-Landed Position & Company: President, The San Diego Paper Box Company
Prior to landing your new position, were you currently working or in-transition? I went into transition in March 2018.
How did you get connected to the company where you landed your new role? I applied to a job posting that I found on LinkedIn/Zip Recruiter.
In your estimation, what allowed you to stand-out during the interview process? I read the job description closely and focused on the needs of the organization and how I would be able to bring value as a future leader in addressing those needs. I also followed up with the company’s HR department with a phone call once I had submitted my resume/application online to ask what the process of selection was like and when I could expect to hear back regarding my submission. I truly believe this aggressive approach helped me stand apart from others.
Did you encounter any challenges while being vetted for this new position? If so, how did you overcome them? Nothing out of the ordinary. I was selected to the final three after the first round of live interviews and then offered the position the day after my final interview.
If you could give an in-transition executive any piece of advice, what would it be? If there is a posted position that you see on a job board that you really feel strongly about, you should go the extra mile to get attention paid to your application. In my case it was a call to the HR Manager but there are certainly other creative ways to go about it. Definitely do not be shy! C-level openings (and in particular those related to Sales) will likely be filled by those demonstrating skills which show they want to close the deal!
Bonus Question: What events and/or resources offered by the Executive Network have helped enhance your career? I feel all the events are worth the time because of the high quality of the participants and the facilitators. Shout out to Victor Dominguez who facilitates the OC Executive Networking Group every other Friday!
